Holiday Home in Chile Overlooks A Volcano And A Small Lake

On a peaceful and quiet hilltop in Curacautin in Chile stands a charming holiday home that was built there by architect Rodolfo Wiedmaier Delorenzo. The house sits between two large and old trees, as if it’s there from the beginning of time. However, it doesn’t attempt to become one with nature. On the contrary, it stands out with its clean and geometric appearance and its exact proportions.

The house was completed in 2014 and offers a total of 470 square meters of living space. They’re all clustered inside a solid, cube-shaped volume. From a structural point of view, the house has a wooden frame placed on top of a concrete base. Both the interior and the exterior are lined in wood. Inside the house, the architect used several varieties and colors of reclaimed native wood and for the exterior he chose a dark gray finish able to give the structure the solid look that the client desired.

In addition to wanting the house to be as geometric and as precisely-shaped as possible, the client also wished for it to frame all the great views that surround it and to capture nature’s beauty as best as possible without interfering with the other requirements or for the need for privacy and security. As a result, the house doesn’t have huge windows or glazed facades. Instead, it’s surprisingly traditional and that suits it well.

The building is a 12 x 12 meter cube with windows of various different shapes and sizes on all sides and with interior spaces that seem vast and cozy at the same time. The architect managed to provide a strong connection with the outdoors and in particular with the views without diminishing the structure’s solid appearance. The interior is organized around a central empty space which connects all the different functions.

A set of skylights bring natural light into the rooms on both floors. The first floor houses the common areas such as the kitchen, the living room and the dining area. The second floor is a private space which contains the bedrooms and their extensions. There’s also a basement space which serves as a sort of playground and also a roof terrace which provides the most amazing and panoramic views of the mountain range, the lake and the volcano.
