Historic countryside home in Salento

This striking residence is located in the countryside of Morciano di Leuca, Italy but with such an intriguing design it would stand out anywhere. The residence, a single-family home, was designed and created by Bologna-based architect Luca Zanaroli. As you can imagine, it wasn’t easy to create this unusual residence.

The designer had to work with the abandoned ruins of two historic structures that were once used as a temporary shelter for local farmers. He had to somehow transform those ruins into a home. Considering the existing structures, the new building couldn’t have been dramatically different. It would have been impossible to work miracles and this wasn’t even the purpose or the request. The new owners wanted to preserve the atmosphere from the once existing historic buildings and to recreate something similar but more modern.

As a result, the new residence has a very minimalist look, with walls of stone and an interior that seems in perfect harmony with the rest. For that the costructers used locally sourced stone dating back to the 1800s. The covered veranda from the enclosed courtyard is an open space where the inhabitants can enjoy the mediteranean climate at its best. Overall, this is a link between past and present, a beautiful continuity between a fallen era and a new beginning.
