Hell of the North, a simple, intimate place in Melbourne

The intention of most restaurants is to establish a relationship between the dining spaces and what is consumed within them. “Hell of the North“, a restaurant – bar in Melbourne,Australia can definitely be included into this category. Designed by SMLWRLD architects, the restaurant was crafted into and around an original 19 th century hotel and the result is the image of a French wine press, detailed timber expressions of gentle force and careful layering of color and depth of texture.

The materials used provide the warmth of timber and burnished brass, but also blackened steel that modifies the Victorian industrial spirit. In an intimate atmosphere with connected dining spaces, the blue surfaces separate old from new and, at the same time, bring out the character and the history of the site. Every corner is well organized, no matter where you look,  either at the bar or anywhere else, everything is perfectly arranged, there are even flowers and decorative plants.

A general air of simplicity and intimacy makes you feel welcome and at ease and this is among the most important aspects that anyone looks for when going to a restaurant. The wooden tables and chairs give a simple air to the environment and make everything attractive through this very simplicity. It is obvious that wood is the key element that gives character, intimacy and history, but also connects everything. The general impression is pleasant and attractive and the words characterizing the entire environment are wood, thus warmth.
