Turn Raw Wood Pieces Into a Trendy DIY Stand

I love projects that are functional so if you are anything like me, I think you will like what I am going to share with you. This DIY wooden stand can serve as a trivet for those hot lasagne pans, a decorative plant base or simply a display stand you can use for anything you wish. Without a doubt, it’s a great accessory to have at home and I’m sure that once you make it, you’ll find many other ways to use it.

I wanted to create something different from a standard flat trivet…something that would add an interesting element to your space. I decided to make it in the shape if a cross, so that it raises up the item you want to display or hold. If you are following my posts on Homedit, you already know that I’m a big fan of a raw wood finish, so that’s what I used for this stand.

Here’s what you will need:

  • Two wood planks of identical size. I used pieces that are 16cm x 5cm and 1 cm thick.
  • Electric saw
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Sandpaper

Follow this step by step tutorial to complete the project:

Caution: If you don’t feel confident using an electric saw, ask your local hardware store to cut the wood pieces for you, or use a small hand saw.

1. First we will need to measure and mark the middle of each plank. Then, draw a 1-cm wide, 2.5-cm deep rectangle  that you will need to cut out later. Depending upon the size of your plank, the measurements may differ. For boards of any other size, the depth of the cut will need to be half of the width of each board. Then, when you connect them, they will form a cross with the boards fitting evenly for a level top.

2. Use the electric saw to cut out the rectangle. Sand the wood pieces well with sandpaper and then connect both elements. That’s it! Now you can decide how you are going to use it.
