Built-in Lights Showcase the Moon's Phases

Uncle Milton's Moon in My Room features rows of lights that glow softly behind the detailed lunar surface. The lights are specially arranged to mimic the phases of the moon, going from a new moon to full moon and all the phases in between. Teach your child about the solar system while watching Moon in My Room show off the moon's progression from dark to light.

Included Remote for Easy Control

Included with Moon in My Room is an infrared remote that lets you control your moon model from across the room. The remote features buttons to turn the lights on or off, trigger each progression of the moon's phases sequentially, or set it to slowly cycle through each phase automatically.

Downloadable Moon Tour

Each Moon in My Room comes with a download code on the instruction sheet. Using this code, you can download an audio tour of the moon from UncleMilton.com. A perfect learning opportunity, you can watch your Moon in My Room cycle through its phases while listening to an informative tour of the lunar landscape.

Auto Shutoff Saves Battery Life

After 30 minutes without interruption, Moon in My Room will automatically shut off to save battery power. This lets you fall asleep to the soft glow of the moon, while conserving battery power to make sure Moon in my Room can be enjoyed for a long time.

Our testers found Moon in My Room to be both detailed and well made. The textured, domed surface was quite realistic and glowed nicely in a dim room. The included remote seems to be the only way to control the Moon unit, so it's important not to misplace it. If you do, however, replacements can be found on the Uncle Milton website.

I bought this for my little girl's 4th birthday (along with stars) as a nightlight. Almost a year later it's still working flawlessly. It is used nightly and really makes her room nice and cozy at bedtime especially coupled with the stick on stars, almost feels like you're outside. We always set it to cycle through the phases, which probably makes it more power hungry as well and brings me to the next point. I would definitely recommend rechargeable batteries! When cycling, it does tend to go through a set every couple months and uses 4 AA batteries in the moon and 2 AAA in the remote. The remote doesn't go through them as fast, and using rechargeable batteries made this a little less painful for me. (stupid AA batteries are in everything, so I already had the charger, just had to pick up some more batteries) A lot of people are stating that it eats batteries weekly. In the almost two years we've used it, I have not found that to be the case. I seldom have to change the RECHARGEABLE batteries more than once every couple months, but we run it until it doesn't light at all not just when it starts dimming. After about a week it does get dimmer, but I feel the battery usage is acceptable. It is used nightly as a night light so it does get used regularly, though maybe not as much as some say because we control the remote usage. Also, it DOES have a power off button on the remote and will shut down after a half hour as well. We also don't have 14' ceilings (and I am 6'5") so pulling it off the wall to replace batteries is not an issue. I wouldn't really call it a toy, and as a plaything it is rather limited. Though it does have an educational value with the phases and really looks quite nice at night. Don't let a lot of the negative reviews dissuade you from what I have found to be a good product. Try it yourself, Amazon has a good return policy if you don't like it. ;) I love it and so does my little Princess! EDIT: I bought this in 2011 and it's still working perfectly in 2021. My not so little girl still loves looking at it every night. Edit 2023(from the "not so little girl"): I still have the moon and stars up in my room and adore it just as much as I did back then. 10/10.

Like any toddler, our 18 month old daughter has developed some fascinations. She loves to see lights being turned on and off. She loves to use remote controls to control the TV/TiVo ('control' may be too strong a word - 'mess with' is probably more appropriate), and to turn lights and fans on and off, herself. And she loves to go outside and look at the moon, and loves any pictures or representations of the Moon.

So, imagine our surprise and delight to find a toy that combines three of her primary fascinations - a representation of the moon, lights that can be turned on and off, and a remote to control it all. It's like the Uncle Milton toy designers had bugged our house, and developed the perfect toy for her.

Without her seeing it beforehand we hung it up on the wall, turned off the room lights, brought her in, and handed her the remote. She knows what remotes do, so immediately started pushing buttons and looking around to see what effect she was having. When the Uncle Milton Moon in My Room started lighting up, she excitedly started pointing and shouting, "Moon! Moon! Moon!" while continuing to push the buttons and change the lighting patterns.

In short, it was a big, BIG hit. The product was simple to set up, you need two AAA batteries for the remote, and four AA batteries for the Moon. The Moon is about the size of a dinner plate, and is concave, so that it curves out from the wall, and in the middle the exterior surface is probably 2.5" to 3" away from the wall. It hangs from a nail, and has three hanging angles to choose from.

It lights from the interior, and the outside shell is semi-translucent, and the features of the Moon are also dimensional, meaning that it's not just painted or a decal, the surface of the unit rises and falls to provide the visual of the features you see in the pictures.

The lights work in a couple of ways. First, you can just turn them on, and the whole Moon is lit. You can also manually run through the phases of the moon, there are six sections/slices of the Moon, and each lights up in sequence, on from right to left, then off from right to left, in an approximation of the progression of the Moon phases. So, when you manually control it, there are twelve steps to move through the complete set of phases.

Lastly, you can set it in automatic mode, where it runs through all the phases continuously, each phase coming about 5 seconds after the last one. This works great as a calming, bed-time diversion, too.

In any mode, the unit will turn itself off after 30 minutes of inactivity. Given that it is battery powered, it's a good thing that it can't simply be turned on and left on. Given how popular this toy is so far, I expect to replace the batteries pretty frequently, but it's a small price to pay.

We liked it so much, we got two of them. Also note that the Uncle Milton web site sells replacement remotes, and I've already got one ordered, as the unit doesn't do anything without the remote. Our toddler likes to 'hide' things and/or drop them in liquid, so I'm assuming we're going to need to replace a lost/broken/drowned/flushed remote at some point.

This is a really neat and worthwhile toy that *I* could fall in love with! My 2 year old son is very interested in the stars, moon and planets at the moment and is always pointing them out in the sky or asking where they are if there are clouds. The moon is a great addition to his room to continue the curiosity when it's too rainy, cold or cloudy outside. It also works great as a nightlight and will automatically turn off after 30 minutes of use.

      USE
The moon's surface is textured to reflect the appearance of the actual moon, giving it more realism. When it's at work as more than a room decoration during the day, it brightens up the room at night as it waxes and wanes through 12 lunar phases. A neat feature that's not mentioned in the product description is that on the back of the moon are 3 hanging holes, so it can be hung at an approximate 30 degree angle to the right or left as well as being able to be hung vertically.

      REMOTE
It uses a remote to scroll through the 12 phases either in automatic (5 second per phase) mode or manual mode. The remote is fairly easy to use as long as my 2 year old remembers to point the correct end at the moon otherwise it won't do anything. I'm having him put the remote in one spot when it's not in use so we don't lose it, because if we do we'd only be able to manually turn it on in the back, and wouldn't be able to use the phases... that's a remote only feature.

      BATTERIES
Amazon's description of the product lists it as only using 2-AAA batteries, but come to find out that's just for the remote. The moon uses 4-AA batteries as well.

Several reviewers have made mention of the short battery life. If it runs for 30 minutes a night, every night, for 3 months as some have claimed it does, that's 45 continuous hours of life. We found Sanyo NEW 1500 eneloop 8 Pack AA Ni-MH Pre-Charged Rechargeable Batteries a little while back and use them for everything battery operated. They will last longer than standard batteries and even rival other rechargeables, so we're using them in this product in hopes that it will help with the battery issue.

      OVERALL
This is a realistic and fascinating toy for any child (or adult) to enjoy. Highly recommended!
