Glass Pavilion Takes The Place Of An Orchard But Keeps Its Memory Alive

The Wirra Willa Pavilion is located in Somersby, Australia and serves as a private retreat and spa. It was designed by Matthew Woodward Architecture and sits on a site that was originally a citrus fruit orchard.

The residence is a glass pavilion surrounded by lush vegetation on all sides. It was designed as a multifunctional structure with a flexible structure. The remote location allows it to remain private even with glass walls. This feature also exposes it to the landscape and the mesmerizing views.

The pavilion cantilevers over the spring fed dam and seems to float over the water. In fact, water plays a very important role in its design, not just because of the way it surrounds the building. Inside the pavilion, the floors opens to reveal an in-ground tub, a surprising but at the same time natural element, considering the location.

The materials selected for the project were meant to harmonize the building to its natural setting ad surroundings. The pavilion is composed of two rectangular volumes, one made of steel, concete and glass and the other with a sandstone cladded core.

The building is oriented towards the north-east as to take full advantage of the sun and to respond to the prevailing winds. The sliding glass panels let in all the light and can also open to let in the beautiful breeze in the summer months.
