Gardiner House in Melbourne, Australia

Located in Melbourne, Australia, the Gardiner House was designed by 4site Architecture and built with the help of A.T. Interiors & Construction Pty Ltd and Coulthard Shim Pty Ltd. The construction was completed in 2010 and the total project area is 39 sqm. On the lot there was already and exiting property. However it was poorly planned and it had no access to natural light and no connection to the yard. Still, there were two bedrooms and small but functional living area that had potential. The client asked for a new bathroom, laundry and a kitchen and dining area to be added to the combo.

Because the property was facing south there were some problems related to the natural light and the limited access to the yard. The solution was to create a central service core that would contain the bathroom and the laundry and that would allow the other rooms to be connected to the yard. This way the kitchen/dining room would benefit from its close proximity to the private open space.

The addition that had to be created consists of two elements that are connected by a small hallway. Those two elements are a white box that contains the new bathroom and laundry while the other includes the open plan kitchen and dining area and a black metal box that reaches out over the while one for some natural light. This way all the problems were solved.{found on archdaily}
