Culture And Technology: The Emerson College Campus by Morphosis Architects

We all know that education is the first step towards evolution, which means that there will always be room for campuses or other suitable places for students. Morphosis Architects, led by Thom Mayne, have created the Emerson College on Sunset Boulevard, L.A. This campus is designed to connect and provide shelter for over 200 undergraduate students that are willing to learn new things in fields such as art, communication and other interdisciplinary studies.

With an amazing futuristic look, almost inspired from Science Fiction movies, the Emerson College looks as if it’s in a continuous progress. The dramatic aspect of the building will visually stimulate you and, most likely, will leave you speechless. Of course, architecture is one of the main details that define this complex, but it’s not the only one!  We were surprised to see how easily student housing, administrative offices and instructional facilities can be incorporated in a single structure.  Even more: there are over 240 parking spaces, set on four levels (three of them are below ground) for students and teachers who own cars. For further details, check out these pictures made by Iwan Baan and Roland Halbe.

Let’s talk a little about this marvelous piece of art. With two 10 story towers almost entirely shaped by aluminum and glass structures, the Emerson College is equipped with a weather station and has an automated sunshade system with a double purpose: allowing daylight and reducing heat.

On the inside, it’s a technology heaven. Designed to combine learning, social interaction and creativity, here you will find all the facilities you would ever need as a student. Among them we mention: a screening room with 4K projectors, an editing lab, an audio lab, “a distance learning room” where you can assist lectures from Boston, an open air amphitheater, a glass walled conference room and other classrooms and offices. Oh, and in case you want a coffee break all you have to do is to order one at the ground floor café.
