Artistic Renovation Of An Eclectic Apartment In Singapore

This stylish Singaporean apartment was recently renovated by KNQ Associates, a studio founded in 2004. Initially the company was just a boutique interior design studio specialized in rejuvenating living spaces, a service they named Home Rejuvenation. Since then, the small company branched out, creating design projects for offices, retail spaces as well as private homes. They’re continuing to offer bespoke interior designs for discerning clients.

This apartment was designed for a client with an eye for beautiful art. It had to reflect this passion and to serve as a sort of art gallery adapted for living. The designers managed to make that possible and the beauty of the design is visible even from the entrance.

The entry hall sets the tone for the rest of the apartment, featuring a mirrored wall complemented by a white wall-mounted console unit with geometric front panels and a framed painting that adds vibrant colors to the space. The accent wall with its rust iron finish makes it clear that there’s also a subtle industrial side to the design.

From here the social area can be accessed. It contains an open plan that houses the living area, dining space and kitchen. It now becomes clear that there’s no individual style that prevails here. Neither the designers or the owners had any intention of being limited by a single style.

The interior design is soothing and inviting, being characterized by adequate lighting, beautiful fixtures and simple and functional furniture. Texture plays an important role in the overall décor. The main idea here was to experiment with different design styles, materials and textures in order to find the perfect balance.

The lounge area has access to an open balcony. Sliding glass doors link the spaces, revealing a small table and chair, the perfect spot for admiring all the greenery and the surroundings. Long gray curtains can conceal the balcony and successfully block the light whenever needed.

A small sofa with light gray fabric upholstery and patterned accent cushions is facing a wall-mounted TV. The accent wall behind it is wallpapered and features an open shelf which is ideal for displaying collectibles. The yellow console table has casters and can be moved around as needed.

To the left of the lounge area is the open kitchen. High gloss white cabinets and a light gray backsplash allow the kitchen to look bright and spacious. The furniture was custom designed and the appliances were built in, showing a perfect fit. The dining table is in fact a cantilevered counter attached to a small wall unit. A bench with hairpin legs on one side and a pair of bar stools on the other turn the counter into a comfortable dining table. It was customized with hexagonal tiles and a tempered glass top. Track lighting illuminates the living space while a pendant lamp resembling a blooming flower adds a warm touch to the dining area and the kitchen.

The master bedroom features certain similarities to the social area. For example, the masculine color palette composed of white and gray was used in both areas and is complemented by simple, clean lines and vibrant accents.

The full height windows feature horizontal blinds and their clean, parallel lines are complemented by cylindrical nightstands. The TV wall is the focal point of the room, featuring colored accent lighting that highlights the texture and frames the TV area.

The apartment also has a guest bedroom but its design is quite unexpected. The designers wanted to take advantage of the 3.4 meter (11 foot) high ceiling so they came up with the idea for a loft bed with a desk underneath. This meant that a sleeping area and a workspace could occupy very little floor space without sacrificing either comfort or functionality.

The platform can be accessed via a staircase with storage steps and has glass balustrades that allow views of living space. Up here there’s plenty of space for a bed, a storage unit and a TV. A neon sign and a whitewashed brick wall give the space a chic and bold vibe.

Underneath the platform there’s a desk framed by shelves, with full height windows and horizontal blinds on one side and the staircase on the other.
