Dream Downtown Hotel by Handel Architects

This luxury hotel is located in the Chelsea neighborhood in New York. It’s a boutique hotel that was renovated and remodeled by Handel Architects. Originally, the building was created in 1966 for the Maritime Union. It was later converted into a luxury hotel. Even though it changed its function, the building preserved its original design and most of the themed features.

For example, the punched porthole windows were designed to express the maritime influence. After the building was turned into a hotel, the windows were kept as such even though they no longer had any close significance to the actual theme and function of the building. However, they were part of is history. The hotel has 12 floors and it contains 316 guestrooms. Besides these, it also offers two restaurants, rooftop and VIP lounges, an outdoor pool with a pool bar and a multifunctional space for all sorts of events.

Because of the portholes from the façade, the interior wasn’t getting as much natural light as it could have without them. But since they were an important part of the building’s architectural history, they were preserved and the lighting problem had to be solved by other means. Four floors were removed from the center of the building and turned into a new pool terrace, beach, two new floors for guestrooms and a space with new windows and balconies. To continue the design, the glass bottom pool also has portholes that allow guests in the lobby to catch a glimpse of the outdoors through water.
