Supplies you’ll need to craft a storage basket for yarn:

  • One fat quarter of fabric
  • Heat adhesive interfacing
  • Iron
  • Ironing board
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Sewing scissors
  • Straight edge with measure
  • Cutting mat
  • Rotary cutter
  • Fabric pen
  • Pins

Instructions step by step to sew the fabric basket:

DIY Fabric Basket Step 1

Step 1: Ironing process

Start by ironing your fat quarter to get out any wrinkles or folds.

Step 2: Fold fabric

Fold your fat quarter (width wise) in half and measure the middle section. The fat quarter should be a large 18″ x 22″ square so when folded in half you should create a 11″ x 18″ rectangle. Cut down the center fold that you made in the fat quarter to create 2 separate but equal size piece of fabric.

Step 3: Cut the fabric

Cut a piece of interfacing approximately (or slightly larger) than each of your fabric rectangles.

Step 4: Interfacing the fabric

Iron your fabric (right side up) to the interfacing to adhere the interfacing to the fabric. Do this with both pieces of fabric. Cut off any excess interfacing so that you have a perfect 11″ x 18″ rectangle.

Step 5: Rectangle shape

Set one rectangle aside. Fold the other one in half (wrong side out and width wise) and pin down the sides.

Step 6: Sewing process

Sew along the sides that you pinned. Remove the pins.

Step 7: Box corner

Create a box corner by folding over the seam that you just sewed down horizontally against the bottom fold. Fold that seam down perfectly on the bottom fold so that you create a 90 degree angle at the corner. Measure 2 inches out from the corner up the sides and mark a dot. Connect the two dots with a straight edge and draw a line down the straight edge.

Step 8: Pin

Pin and sew along the line that you drew on the corner.

Step 9: Corner sew

Place your straight edge between the corner and the seam your just sewed and cut off the corner. This completes your box corner.

Step 10: Repeating steps

Repeat steps 7-9 for the other corner. This will leave you with a boxy bottom and circular opening basket insert.

Step 11: Set aside

Repeat steps 5-10 with the fabric piece you had set aside to create the other part of the basket.

Step 12: Turn right side out

Insert one basket part right side in into the other basket turned right side out.

Step 13: Edges

Fold the edges of each of the sides of the basket inwards and pin to make a seam.

Step 14: cut the excess

Sew along the pins to create the finishing seam that sews the inside and outside of the basket together. Cut off any excess strings.

Use this basket with the edges up or fold them down to adjust the height to your storage needs!
