Department store design in Hong Kong by Wonderwall

Masamichi Katayama, founder and lead designer of Japanese based design and architecture firm Wonderwall, had worked at an elaborate project for fashion retail I.T. in a department store in Hong Kong. They wanted to create something unique, that would make the customers enjoy their shopping experience and would make them want to come back.

The idea was to design a different theme for each floor, allowing customers to have a unique and diversified shopping experience within the same space. So the basement level has an industrial-like warehouse/factory theme. This floor houses the menswear department so it’s a matching theme. On the ground level we can see a military theme achieved by using harder materials like metal, black fencing and hardwood floors. The second floor was intended to offer a “feeling of the street in a residential neighborhood. This floor houses younger and more casual brands. The third floor is more elegant and luxurious, featuring curved walls and a more sophisticated design.

The ground floor houses a BAPE STORE®, with its own private entrance. Here the designers chose to use a combination of materials, like metal, stone and glass, creating a modern and simple design. Wonderwall managed to create a very specific design, with different matching themes on each floor, created to offer unique and contrasting shopping experiences.
