Cool Chairs With Unexpected Designs And Functions

We all know that universal image or symbol for chair portraying it as a four-legged piece of furniture with a backrest and pretty much nothing else. But not all designs follow that concept, especially not the cool ones. Just like their cousins the lounge chairs, regular chairs know some pretty unusual and amazing designs.

Nest.

The Nest chair was designed by Nina Bruun and was obviously influenced by nature, more exactly by a bird’s nest. Though it may seem chaotic, the chair’s design follows the main guidelines, featureing four stabilizing legs, a bottom and a seat. It’s made of numerous birch strips in different thicknesses hurled around the supporting structure.

Silk.

The Silk Chair is not only really interesting from a visual point of view but also environmentally friendly. It was created by Alvi Design and has an oak frame and lots of silk thread tightened around the supporting structure. Depending on the angle you look at it, the chair changes its design and aspect.

Pipo.

Designed by Alejandro Estrada for Piegatto, the Pipo Chair is made of two sheets of plywood and it features 29 main curved sections cut into two or three overlapped pieces. It has a water-based coating and a monolithic shape defined by elegant curves.

Maya.

The Maya chair by Arya Alfieri has a continuous, curvacious frame created from four semi-circles welded together and coated with powder paint. The designer used plastic rope such as the type used in the nautical field to create the seat. The chair is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

Saji.

The Wavy design of the Saji Chair gives it a sophisticated look. It was a project by Laura Kishimoto who used layers of thin laminated strips. These were bent and weaved and the result was a delicate but rigid design with a dynamic and chic look.

Steam.

Korean designer Bae Sehwa came up with two interesting seating pieces named Steam 11 and 12. they’re both sophisticated and ideal for modern and contemporary interiors. One features a more compact look while the other is supported by four simple legs.

Pegas.

The Pegas chair proposes an interesting and unusual concept. It has a very simple design which allows the user to adjust the seat height and backrest cushioning. The chair features a series of padded layers which can be divided in numerous ways, depending on the needs and preferences of the user.

Curvy.

The story behind this majestic chair is quite interesting. It all started when architect Eduardo Benamor Duarte participated at the Arts on Chairs Duets event and was paired with writer Paulo Coelho. The result was a unique chair with a curvy and sculptural design that materializes the world of the writer’s literary work.

Diwani.

The Diwani chair is a rocker designed by AE Superlab featuring a sculptural look inspired by the Arabic Diwani calligraphic scrips. It has a dramatic silhouettes defined by soft curves and graphic lines and it’s made of high-strength cross-laminated plywood and the limited edition offers two options: white birch or a customizable multi-colored look.

Rising.

In the case of the Rising chair, the design was not predetermined. It took shape in time as the designer created he various arches of the wooden beams that form the seat. But the most interesting detail is the fact that the chair comes as a flat board and then rises as its name suggests and becomes the intricate piece of furniture you see here.

Peacock.

The Peacock chair captures the majestic beauty of the bird’s tail or a blossoming flower in an impressive design by Uufie. The chair is made from a type of acrylic composite which is difficult to manipulate but really flexible and strong.

Made of bamboo strips, the Flow chair designed by Cheng-Tsung Fenf and Kao-Min Chen has an organic look and is the perfect lounger for enjoying lazy afternoons out on the deck or I the garden. Of course, it can also be used indoors.

Urban Philosophy is a chair designed by Nissa Kinzhalina. It’s made of transparent acrylic and has a graphical and sketchy look emphasized by the thin black line running along one of the outer edges. Depending on the perspective and angle, it outlines various shapes.

A lot of modern chair designs focus on making the piece as space efficient as possible without sacrificing comfort or function. The Twain Chairs by Marina Lothigius are stackable and can be treated as a single unit or as two individual ones whenever needed.

The Oyster chair by Kawamura Ganjavian can also be folded and it becomes a seat cushion. Unfold it to create a cozy and comfortable chair which offers more support. It’s a nice piece of furniture for casual and modern homes.
