Contemporary family residence in Japan by Naoko Horibe

This contemporary residence is located in Nara, Japan. It was designed for a family with young children and it was a project by Naoko Horibe. The house covers a surface of 165.34 square meters and it was completed in 2011. What’s interesting about this structure is that the front façade has no windows at all. It only has a white door and nothing more. It seems very mysterious.

The house has a minimalist design and a compact shape. It features a Japanese-style mezzanine level and two more floors. Even though it seems odd to have no windows on the front façade, this was a decision based on the privacy level that the owners needed. It was also something related to safety. The exterior design of the house is very simple. It consists of a geometrical white structure with an attached square-shaped volume that seems to be floating.

The interior of the residence is very diverse. There are three levels, each with its own function. The first floor contains the living room, dining room and kitchen. It’s a social space designed for family activities and interaction. The second floor contains the children’s rooms. There’s also a mezzanine level that links and connects several spaces. The diversity of levels created a dynamic interior and a stimulating environment for both the children and the parents.{found on archdaily}.
