Portland Home Artfully Combines A Craftsman Design with a Contemporary Aesthetic

A 1950’s ranch in Portland, Oregon got new life through a transformation that resulted in this gorgeous craftsman home with a contemporary aesthetic. The busy homeowners wanted a house that was specifically made for their lifestyle and family. Located in the suburb of Portland Heights, this neighborhood sits in the hills above downtown and is coveted for its easy access to the city and Westside tech corridor.

The exterior of the home by Garrison Hullinger Interior Design exudes the natural feel of the Pacific Northwest and has an utterly charming curb appeal. A generously sized gabled roof provides cover for the entrance to the front door, which is quite useful in this area of the country where winter weather might not be terrible cold. but can be quite wet. Easy care plantings echo the forested surroundings of the home.

Inside, the homeowners wanted a space where they could also indulge their love of entertaining and that reflected their unique personalities and fondness for art. The result is this flowing space that marvelously combines craftsman features with carefully selected industrial accents and a contemporary undercurrent. At the center of the open plan living area, a clean-lined dining table and leather chairs take center stage. Overhead, a pair of rustic chandeliers provides both light and visual drama. Architectural details are highlighted through the use of natural wood both inside and in the outdoor balcony spaces.

Large sliding glass doors open onto the main deck, which is covered, extending the use of the space into the seasons that tend to be wetter. The furnishings are relaxed and comfortable, with a style that’s not fussy and made for relaxing. The way this covered deck connects to the main living space is ideal because in the warmer months, it expands the area and erases some of the boundaries between the indoors and the outdoors. While the family can enjoy the view from the interior, it’s even better appreciated from this outdoor oasis.

Just off the dining space is this cozy living room that centers around the large stone fireplace. This is a must for the overcast, rainy weather in the region and the design keeps a ready supply of wood that is both a stylish accent and a necessity. the overall neutral palette is livened up with a number of carefully chosen, colorful accents such as the drapes, pillows and smaller accessories. The artwork anchoring the corner by the window is an unexpected splash of turquoise that immediately draws the eye. Throughout the space, pots of plants and greenery connect the space to the outdoors.

The family room has a much more casual feeling and it’s were family members can quite literally put their feet up and read, watch television or just relax. The room has a sloughy leather sectional and large ottoman that doubles as a coffee table. Built-in adjustable light fixtures eliminate the need for table or floor lamps, allowing the width of the space to be used for seating.

This updated kitchen area was given a visual lift and brightened by painting the existing cabinetry a warm, creamy white, which contrasts nicely with the wood floor. In the center, a large island includes countertop dining space as well as a big space for food prep. At the ceiling, the suspension light has candle-type fixtures that really amp up the coziness. The granite top sports a leather finish and the base is painted a rich gray that picks up on the backsplash. The countertops are done in a white quartz that keeps the overall look bright. Over the range, the grand hood was recovered in a faux-copper finish that ads an accent and a warm metallic to the palette. Another distinguishing feature of this kitchen is the architectural detailing that repeats the table leg style beside the range and the sink.

Wood figures prominently in the interiors of this home and this artful arrangement of circular mirrors in various sizes breaks up the expanse of wall that is clad in natural planks.  It’s a great tactic for adding interest to a space without creating visual clutter or additional pieces of furniture.

In the master bedroom, a serene color palette creates a very relaxing space. Minimal accessories and furnishings meet the needs of the owners and avoid cluttering the area with unnecessary pieces. A low headboard on the bed lets the entire window area actually frame the bed. Without the curved upper shutter detail, the window above the bed would be plain and uninspired, but this architectural feature completely transforms it. Louvered French doors provide access to a private deck.

There’s lots to love in the revamped master bathroom. The designers got rid of a bathtub and replaced it with this long double vanity. Underneath the engineered stone countertop, loads of drawers provide plenty of storage space and the basket shelf at the bottom adds a visual break and more handy storage. Innovative elements like the mirrored medicine cabinets that include electrical outlets help keep the aesthetic uncluttered. The entire bathroom is highlighted by the limestone tile wall and its monochromatic wavy pattern, while the hanging glass sconces bring in another design element as well as additional lighting.

The light colors used in the bathroom are nicely contrasted by the darker gray marble tile floor. It’s also accented by the patterns in the spacious shower, with its pebbled floor and horizontally oriented plank tiles. The remodeled space with more room, larger vanity and more shower space are features that better fit this couple’s lifestyle

In a departure from the color palette that dominates the majority of the rooms, this one features mint-colored walls and window trim. The green interior looks like it blends with the greenery outdoors and still makes the space feel brighter. An easy-care floor covering instead of wood makes it more comfortable for people to plop down on the floor for games and puzzles at the large coffee table. Built-in cabinetry and a window ledge add some seating or table space, and offer a way to stash away electronic elements or games and other diversions.

We love this house for all of its comfort and the way the designers have combined the craftsman style with a more modern aesthetic. It shows how a renovation can bring about all the contemporary comforts people want and still make use of an existing structure in a great location.
