California home resting between the ocean and the highway

Ideally we would all have a home somewhere where we can be close to our office but also close to the beach or the ocean so that we can pack a few things and get away from everything whenever we want to relax and have fun. For some of us, that’s reality. This is a house located in California and it sits between the ocean and the highway. It’s the perfect balance.

The owners really wanted a quiet and refreshing home after their retirement. They wanted it to be along the California coast where they can enjoy beautiful views but still be close to the city. After 10 years of searching they finally found this place. It’s a lovely home but, because the site measures under 1 acre, they didn’t have the permission to build a guest house. They really wanted that for their visiting relatives and friends so they started looking for alternative solution. They interviewed 13 different architects without any success. Finally, they found Barry Berkus of B3 Architects who seemed to have the answer to their problem.

The final design was completed in 1009 and it cost the owners $5 million. The result was a modern home with classic lines. The house features a U shape with square edges. One wing is parallel to the ocean and offers wonderful views. This volume includes the master bedroom and the main living areas. The second wing includes the guest areas. This way the house has them both and it also features a close indoor-outdoor connection. The two wings are separated by an open courtyard.{found on wsj}.
