A black house in the desert is definitely an unusual sight. The story of this beautiful residence is very beautiful. Located on a site which presents tough challenges which were the reason why the previous owners gave up trying, this modern house was designed to replace the rocks that were scraped away in the process as a shadow or a negative.
The contemporary black house was designed and built by Oller & Pejic Architecture. Trying to find the right design was a challenge and required a lot of research.
The architects chose a minimalist approach and they wanted it to be in sync with the landscape. When designing the layout, they wanted the experience of moving through the house to be reminiscent of traversing the site outside. The rooms were arranged in a linear sequence and the kitchen and dining area were placed in the center. In the center of the house is a courtyard which serves as an intermediate space.
The fact that the house is black has a big impact on the overall views. During the day, the landscape is more prominent and the house goes almost unnoticed. At night, the lighting and the stars form a beautiful backdrop. The interior of the house is also dark. The walls are black throughout and so are the floors and ceilings. The huge windows and glass walls let in tons of natural light and the brightly colored furniture and accent elements create eye-catching contrasts.
