Bedroom Design Tips for a Young Girl’s Room

Young girls want a bedroom that feels like their own space and gives them a sense of warmth and homeliness. A bedroom that has been styled for a baby, or an infant, can soon be outgrown, but a bedroom design that would appeal to a teenager is not likely to hit the right mark either. Consider the things that are likely to appeal young girls, but remember not to overdo a particular aspect. Kids can be surprisingly fickle, so don’t go for a design with a single motif.

A young girl that is obsessed with ponies for months, for instance, may think they are old hat soon. Every little girl is different, so it worth giving her bedroom a unique touch, or two, to make her feel special.

Decorate For the Future.

It is essential not to only think about the current age of the girl in question before you begin to make changes to her room’s design. A bedroom that will be grown out of quickly will mean you return to drawing board sooner than you would like. Including some elements of the design that are a little older, or more sophisticated, will mean that the room continues to be a delight in the years to come. If the child is old enough, why not include her in the design process?

Storage.

Clutter is the major problem with a youngster’s personal space as even the most thoughtful of children will not think to tidy their room unless prompted. Toys, games, clothes and books tend to find their natural home on the floor. Consider making a dedicated storage space for each of these, so that the child can easily identify where items should go. If you are buying a wardrobe, opt for one with drawers, so shoes have their own home, for instance. Identify a bed that has storage space beneath it. Bedsteads and divans, with sliding drawers, are good choices. Bunk beds that have storage units, or a desk space, beneath them make the most use of the available area in even the smallest of bedrooms.

Night Time.

Creating a space that a young girl will want to play in is one thing. However, remember that you will also want to establish a soothing place that will encourage her to sleep, as well. Ponder painting the ceiling as a starry night sky with deep blue and stars picked out in brilliant white or silver. Alternatively, select drapes that have the same effect, since these won’t be too intrusive during the day time. Another good idea is to have control over the light in the room. Installing a dimmer switch to the main light fitting is helpful. A light fitting that adds some sparkle will go down well. Chandeliers can add a touch of shimmering fun to a girl’s room, for instance.

Color Schemes.

Fuchsia and even powder pinks can overpower a room unless used sparingly. Often a delightfully thought out bedroom will fall down because the color scheme screams ‘girl space’. There is nothing wrong with using pink, especially set against whites and creams. However, consider making use of other hues because many young girls outgrow the desire for all things pink. Greens and browns hit a gender neutral tone, but why not consider light blues as well?

Play Space.

Unless your girl’s room has a size and shape that naturally defines a play area a good way to do so is to use a rug. A non slip rug, which will go in the washing machine, placed at one side of a room will encourage a child to play in a particular area. If the rug gets ruined with a messy game, or paints, all you have to do is replace it without the expense of changing your carpet.
