An Apartment Design Inspired By Hobbies And Artisanal Beauty

We think every home’s interior design should be inspired by the things its inhabitants love most, their hobbies, passions and their favorite subjects. These elements can make the difference between a space that feels like home and one that’s just another mainstream structure. A lack of character and charm can make a space become boring fast. We recently found an apartment which can help us exemplify everything we mentioned so far. It’s located in downtown Taipei, in Taiwan and was remodeled by Waterfrom Design in 2016.

The whole interior design of this 129 square meter apartment was inspired by the owners’ hobbies and personalities. They love cycling and reading and these two themed were combined to create a set of floating shelves in the living room which hold books, collectibles as well as a bike. There is in fact a wall-mounted bike rack which fits into the decor quite naturally.

The living area also has a TV wall mount which keeps the decor simple and practical. The living room, kitchen, dining area and a small workspace corner share an open floor plan and complement each other quite nicely. The designers were also inspired by their client’s passion for handcrafted elements so they carefully inserted decor elements which suggest artisanal beauty and a cozy rhythm throughout.

Everything we mentioned so far was done while maintaining a very simple design approach defined by linearity. The decor and the layout are very fluid and harmonious, the colors are neutral, the materials used are simple and yet the apartment doesn’t look mainstream at all. It’s all the quirky elements like the bike put on display or the shelves and display racks which expand beyond the ceiling and filter light through metal mesh screens that ensure the uniqueness and beauty of this space. There’s also a really nice layering of elements which ensure balance and harmony throughout.

The social spaces are all connected and form an open plan volume with crisp background walls, tiled flooring and the occasional industrial metal and rustic wood accents. The bedroom is a separate space. It has this minimalist wall unit, wooden flooring and a decor that’s still simple and yet really cozy and comfortable.
