Rustic North Woods Wisconsin Cabin Is a Perfect Family Getaway

A classic 1930s cabin in the far north woods of Wisconsin has been reimagined as a quirky and secluded family getaway. Designed by Chisel Architecture, the home capitalizes on the beautiful views of its lakeside location and is even named Island View Breeze.

This rustic cabin is located in Cable, a town in Bayfield County, Wisconsin. The town is in the heart of a national forest and is called “Trail Town USA” because it has so many trails for mountain biking, hiking, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. The area is also popular for fishing and paddling.

This north country paradise is the ideal setting for a real retreat made for fun and enjoying the outdoors. The renovation included additions to expand the porch and kitchen, but the interior ceiling and its original height were preserved in the new design. The wooded location and casual outdoor spaces like the fire pit out back add to the relaxing features of the home.

Throughout the home, the architects incorporated new in-swing casement windows to allow fresh breezes from the lake to circulate throughout. The overall design of the interior, by Lucy Interior Design, is decidedly rustic cabin style. The family room centers around the large stone fireplace and features walls paneled in knotty pine.

The expanded porch is a marvelous space that is light-filled and ideal for relaxing at any time of day. From an early morning cup of coffee to a later afternoon nap or reading session, the porch lets you feel like you’re outdoors but protected from insects or inclement weather.

Industrial touches like the pendants over the island add a bit of quirkiness.

At the other end of the kitchen is the dining area, which can easily accommodate more people. The entire home is dominated by wood and this area is no different. The colorful yellow smeg refrigerator adds a pop of color and reminds everyone that the place is meant for fun.

This entry porch has plenty of room to sit and pull off your boots or stash the firewood you brought in for the evening. It’s also spacious enough that it could be used as a reading or workspace if necessary.

The master bedroom is casual but bright and white in contrast to the natural wood paneling on the main floor. Shiplap on the walls and ceiling carry through the casual, farmhouse feel and simple furnishings are stylish and easy care. Natural rugs and textiles are ideal for a vacation property. An additional bed is snuggled into an alcove in the master bedroom and the details on the woodwork make it feel like it’s in the trees.

The second bedroom is attached to the mater and features two twin beds, upholstered poufs and plenty of windows. The same white shiplap is found throughout a portion of the upstairs.

Another section of the bedrooms is clad in the same warm wood paneling found downstairs. It forms the built-ins as well as the surface of the ceiling. Dark accents like the bed and the light fixtures add some contrast, as they do in the bathrooms as well.
