70 square meters divided in individual rooms by mihadesign

In Setagaya, Tokyo, Japan, there is a very interesting apartment with an odd name. It’s called nr 1977 and it’s a contemporary residence, designed and created by mihadesign. Its construction was completed in 2011 and the apartment covers a surface of 71.5 sqm. The project consisted of the renovation of the apartment so that is would suit the new owners, a couple with four children.

The apartment originally consisted of several rooms measuring approximately 70 sqm each and it would have been impossible to keep the same structure and be able to create a bright and spacious design. As a consequence, all the walls have been taken down. There was one big room after that. Then two wood-covered box-like structures were added diagonally. The space above the boxes is only 1.1m high but it’s enough for the children to play in.

The open floor plan of the apartment allows the parents to know at all time where their children are and by removing the walls the space is now bigger. It might seem a little drastic because there’s very little privacy in there. One of the boxes (the blue one) is used as a bedroom by the couple and their youngest child. The other box is a private space for the other three children. This is definitely an unusual apartment. But if the owners are happy with it, that’s everything we need to know. In the end, everyone has the right to make their own choices.{found on archdaily}
