20 Of The World’s Narrowest Houses – Comfort In A Tiny Space

When designing or building a home, size matters but it’s not the most important thing. In fact, there are lots of tiny houses which look incredibly inviting and comfortable. Today we’re going to take a look at some of the world’s narrowest houses and see how they were designed and how functional they really are.

The Keret House was designed by Jakub Sczesny and is located in Warsaw, Poland. The house was built between two existing buildings and it’s a narrow, windowless structure which at its widest point measures only 122 centimeters and 72 centimeters at its narrowest. It serves as a temporary home for traveling writers. Since there was no room for windows, the whole structure is semi-transparent.

In Madre de Deus, Brazil, there’s a building which was called the narrowest house in the world. In was designed by architect Helenita Queiroz Grave Minho and it’s 1 meter wide at its narrowest and reaches 10 meters in height. Inside, the house contains 3 bedrooms, a kitchen, a laundry, a bathroom and two other rooms. Built with minimal resources and a unique design, the house is one of the city’s main attractions.

Situated on a site with a very irregular shape measuring 3.26 meters in width and 29.3 meters in depth, this house features a very unusual design. Atelier Tekuto were responsible for this project and they designed the house with fiber reinforced plastic panels for the exterior walls and metal mesh floors. The translucent materials allow light to also get into the basement. The house was named “Lucky Drops”.

Located on a lot between a road and a river channel in west Tokyo, this house features a triangular floor plan and it was built by MIZUISHI Architect Atelier. The walls and the roof were pushed to the limit in order to maximize the usable space. Even so, the house measures only 55.2 square meters in total and it has two floors and a mezzanine level. The interior, however, feels spacious thanks to the simple design.

This one is actually an extension to an already existing house but it’s still intriguing. The extension was designed for a terraced house in south London by Alma-Nac and it’s located between two properties. It has a narrow and deep floor plan. The main challenge was bringing light inside and that was made by adding a sloping roof with skylights.

Designed by Fujiwarramuro Architects and located in Nada, Japan, this house sits on a site that measures only 36.95 square meters. It’s very narrow and tall and it was built in the gap between two existing buildings. Skylights allow light to reach all the floors and 3D gaps and holes make the space seem less narrow and tiny.

Japan is also home to another tall and narrow house, this time located in Showa-cho. The house was designed by FujiwarraMuro Architects. It features a large open living room on the ground floor and three levels in total. Stairs connect the floors and the glass facade allows light to enter all the rooms.

In Tokyo there’s a residence that sits on a 91 square meter site and has three floors. It was designed by Studio Loop in collaboration with Iwashita Strutural Enginners. The clients requested a parking space, a powder room, two study rooms, a living room and a Japanese room, a pantry for the kitchen and a roof terrace. All these spaces are vertically connected. The house has white stucco walls on the exterior and white wallpaper on the inside.

Designed by Kenji Architectural Studio, this narrow house can be found in Osaka, Japan. It’s structured on three levels and it sits on a 43 square meter site. The large windows open up the residence to the exterior and the landscape while also letting in light. The ground floor houses the panrents’ bedroom, the family room is on the first floor, the kids’ bedroom on the second and the terrace is on the roof.

Called “Near House” this residence is situated in Tokyo and was a project by Mount Fuji Architects Studio. The house features two sections on an L-shaped site and it was built between two buildings. At the front of the site there’s the gate house which leads to the main house at the back of the plot. Both sections have two levels.

TUTU is a small house in Tokyo with a floor area of 27 square meters and three levels. The site on which it was built is 3.5 meters wide and 11 meters deep. The residence features a black exterior with floor-to-ceiling glass walls at the front of the house and small windows on the sides. The house was a project by Shimada Architects.

Rooftecture S is a highly unusual project developed by Shuhei Endo architects in Hyogo-Pref., Japan. It’s a house built on a 130 square meter site, clinging onto a steep inclination facing the sea. The site is 20 meters long and 1.5 to 4 meters deep. A very interesting feature is the roof/wall structure which is a rectangular sheet of metal shingle board.

Designers from Spacespace designed the Long Tall House in Tokyo, Japan. It’s a five-storey residence built on a narrow plot and it comprises a long building and a tall tower. It has two basement floors and three upper floors. The north and south facades have windows which can be covered with large aluminum panels. The site on which the house was built measures approximately 4 meters by 16 meters.

Located in London, on an 8 foot wide site, this tiny house was the creation of architect Luke Tozer. The house was squeezed in between two existing buildings. I has four floors and the front is merely 8 feet wide. This unusual cottage is equipped with rain water harvesting and geothermal systems. The street-facing section is the entrance area and on top of it are three bedrooms.{found on dwell}.

This is 63.02º, a residence built on a site that measures 48,84 square meters in Tokyo, Japan. It was designed and built by Jo Nagasaka + Schemata Architecture Office. The facade is inclined 63.02 degrees toward the front road, hence the name. It has large windows with views of the city and the neighbors’ cherry trees.

This narrow timber house can also be found in Tokyo and it was a project by Unemori Architects. The exterior of the house was clad with timber boards and matching shutter were designed for the large windows. The entrance is in the corner of the building and it leads to a staircase which offers access to the three storeys above and one below. Each floor contains one room.

The Nhabeo House can be found in Hochiminh City, Vietnam. It was designed by Trinhvieta Archtiects and is 4 meters wide and 20 meters long. It has a semi-basement, a mezzanine level and 3 stories above. The total floor area of 238 square meters. The architects designed an intermediate space which connects all other functional spaces and it’s a space occupies by greenery.

The Sliver House is located in Maida Vale in London, on a site wedged between two imposing Victorian buildings. The site is 11 meters deep and 7.5 meters wide. The facade is covered with glass panels which let light get inside but also offer privacy. This was a project by Boyarsky Murphy Architects.

Situated in a downtown district of Tokyo, this house was built for a couple with a small child. It’s a vertical house with a total floor area of 919 square feet. It has three storeys and a steel frame construction and it sits on a 515 square feet site. The residence was designed by APOLLO Archtiects & Associates.

Upsetters Architects completed in 2009 a complex of a beauty salon and a cafe in Tokyo, Japan. The project area was 99.6 square meters and it’s narrow and deep. It was designed as a retreat for the client, with a light and simple interior. Sandwiched between two buildings, the structure is divided into three parts.
