What You Need to Consider When Wall Papering a Bedroom

Even if you have plenty of experience in home décor, wall papering can present some challenges that you do not come across with other design elements. Following a few simple rules will help you get the right effect for your bedroom’s walls. This will give you something that not only adds to the composition of the design, but can be a central feature of it. Make a few considerations before you start work on your bedroom and the results will speak for themselves.

Remember You Are Decorating a Bedroom.

Obtain some samples from your wall paper stockist and try them out in the bedroom you intend to decorate. Wall paper that you might thinks looks just the thing in the showroom may not necessarily work in the context of your home. Wall paper with bold designs can look great but can also give a sense of overpowering the rest of a room’s décor.

This is something your definitely want to avoid in a bedroom, which should create a calm and relaxed atmosphere. Go for neutral colors and simpler designs if you are going to wall paper all of the walls. For busier and bolder patterns consider limiting your wall paper to just one or two walls, depending on the size and shape of your room.

Add Depth.

You can create the illusion of more space in a small bedroom by using a wall paper with vertical stripes. This will give the eye the sense that your room is taller than it actually is. Unbroken single blocks of color, in lighter tones, will reflect more light and give a sense of more space. If the room you are decorating is not regular, adding a wallpaper border can make everything seem straighter and neater.

Paint.

A newly wall papered bedroom is a relatively inexpensive way of enlivening a part of your living space. However, it can also highlight areas that could do with being refreshed as well. Check your room’s wood work and any walls that you will not be papering, since it may well be in your interests to give these elements a single coat of paint to bring them up to standard. And it is certainly worth doing this before, and not after, you have wall papered. Particularly, pay attention to the bedroom’s ceiling as you will not want to paint this with newly decorated walls.

Room to Work In.

Once the design elements have been selected it is time to prepare your bedroom. If you are planning on hanging the wall paper you have chosen yourself, make the room as clear from clutter as possible. It is not always practical or even necessary to remove a bed from the room. But make sure it is as far away from the wall you are working on as you can. Hand held steam wall paper removers are worth hiring if you have more than one wall’s worth of old paper to remove. However, warm water and soap do a good job of getting rid of old paper, too.{picture from site}.

If your wall is uneven, or has imperfections or cracks, it will be best to fix lining paper before starting with your chosen wall paper. Make sure the joins in the lining paper do not match up to the joins with your wall paper. Mix up your adhesive, following the manufacturer’s instructions, and apply it evenly to the back of your paper. Carefully fold the paper into a loose back-and-forth arrangement. Pick it up and place it at the top of the wall. Allow the paper to drop evenly and work it on to the wall from the center towards the edges with a decorator’s brush. Trim the edges and push the paper back on to the wall with your brush.{picture from site}.

Once you have completed the wall papering allow it to dry for 24 hours. Put back the bedroom furniture you removed, but be prepared to rearrange it to suit the new look of your room. Add and remove elements experimentally until you have the desired effect of a room you can relax in. Don’t be put off by any errors you make whilst papering, as you will get better with every turn.
