The Sogn & Fjordane Kunstmuseum, a more artistic point of view on the landscape

Førde is a small town in Norway and is best characterized by its landscape. The surrounding mountains are not only beautiful to look at and climb on but they are have a very strong impact on the whole town, including its architecture. Jostedalsbreen is the largest glacier on the European mainland and it’s in close proximity to the town. It also served as the main inspiration point for the design and architecture of the town’s new museum.

The Sogn & Fjordane Kunstmuseum resembles a crystal-clear block of ice that has slid down from the surrounding mountains. It’s an artistic and very clever way of attracting attention but also of blending in, even with such a futuristic look. The museum was a project by C.F. Møller Architects and it was completed in 2012. It sits on an area of 3,000 square meters and has a very interesting form. The asymmetrical design features displacements in the façade and irregular window apertures. The façade is clad in white glass thus resembling a block of ice. It also features a network of angled lines similar to those seen in ice and these lines are illuminated at night.

The museum has four floors used for exhibition. The top level offers amazing panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. They can also be enjoyed from the roof terrace, also an exhibition space but that can also serve as a stage. Overall, both the interior and exterior design of the museum reflect an artistic and contemporary sense of style.{found on archdaily}.
