The Luftschiff pendant by Kranen/ Gille

This is Luftschiff. It’s a modern light fixture with a name that basically summarizes all its main features. Luftschiff can be best translated as “airship” and it’s a very appropriate name since, as you can see, the pendant looks very similar to a simplified airship or even to a zeppelin.

The Luftschiff pendant lamp was designed by Jos/ Johannes Kranen/ Gille and presented at Maison&Objet 2011 September, Paris. This interesting product can be ordered from the manufacturer and it only comes on request. It has a simple and yet intriguing design. Luftschiff seems to be floating in the air, just like an airship or, even better, like a suspended submarine. The cast-aluminum body of the pendant is being suspended with the help f nearly invisible steel wires. It has a sleek but strong and durable construction.

The heavy black cable obviously can’t be hidden so the floating effect can’t be totally complete. However, the designer managed to create a small dramatic effect with the help of those thin steel wires that hold the pendant up and this way the cable seems to not have anything to do with that. The Luftschiff pendant lamp would be a nice addition to the dining room or even to the office, thanks to its simple and elegant design. It measures 1330 mm in length and it’s a versatile and chic product.Available for 599 euros.
