The Folsom Street Residential Laboratory Project

The Folsom Street Residential Laboratory was a project developed by Todd Verwers Architects. It’s an adaptation of a commercial building’s top floor. The loft is located on Folsom Street in San Francisco, California, USA and it’s a 5,775 square foot area that occupies the top floor of a 1920’s concrete frame structure in San Francisco’s Soma neighborhood.

The space was adapted to the current owner’s needs and it has been turned into a giant toolbox. The owner’s urban lifestyle is what determined the architects working at this project to choose this type of interior décor. They used commercial and institutional materials and formed a flexible and creative space.

The kitchen includes laboratory cabinets and functional shelves that can be used for storage. The space is an open-floor area and the rooms, if they can even be called like this, are not separated by walls. A customized computer floor forms the sleeping platform while an aluminum framing forms an adaptable framing system for an electronics laboratory.

The décor is unusual but some of these components were actually customized to specific client-requirements. The client has a very active and utilitarian lifestyle that combined different types of activities, just the way this loft combined all those spaces. In this sense, the loft suits the client perfectly. It’s not what most of us would want their home to look like but it’s what this particular client wanted and is happy with.{foudn on homedsgn}
