The Clayfield House by Shaun Lockyer Architects

The Clayfield House is a contemporary residence and it was designed and created by Shaun Lockyer Architects. The house is located in Brisbane, Australia. It covers an area of 450 sqm and it was completed in 2011. The project actually consisted in redesigning an already existing house that dated from the 1890s. The house had been previously renovated but it still didn’t feel right for the owners.

Even though the house was spacious and in great conditions, it’s design didn’t really take into consideration the site’s attributions and so it didn’t address the needs of contemporary living in that area. The house had to be re-programmed. As a result, three pods were added. There’s obviously a distinction in terms of materials and architecture between the old and the new structures but this doesn’t create a conflict.

The new structure of the house allows previous dark and under-utilized spaces to be now filled with light and functional. The old and new harmoniously combine and create a unitary structure. The clients’ at first a little skeptical about this project, are now very happy with the results. They got what they wanted and now they can enjoy their new home for many years to come. They now have more freedom in terms of future renovations, not that it’s going to happen soon.{found on archdaily and pics by Aperture Photography}
