The Black Swan sofa by Paolo Grasselli

The Black Swan is an elegant sofa that was designed by Paolo Grasselli in 2012 for Saba Italia. Like most of the designer’s creations, this one focuses on exterior beauty as well as comfort. It has a delicate design and an asymmetry that makes it eye-catching in a subtle but persuasive way.

The name of the sofa is a hint related to the inspiration source for its design. As you probably know, Odette, originally elegant and diaphanous, underwent a transformation that had as a result the metamorphosis of the character into another creature, just as elegant and delicate but in a whole different way. This sofa had a similar faith and, as you can see, its design has certain similarities with the original story. It’s a way of projecting the famous metamorphosis process on a non-organic structure.

The Black swan sofa features a light and sleek frame with soft cushions. The designers tried to find a way of combining these elements without allow them to contrast with each other. The sofa is elegant and delicate and it has a design that allows it to transform. The cushioning doubles and changes size, color and shape. It’s like having two different sofas in one. It’s a beautiful and ingenious design. What’s interesting is that the designers found a way of introducing such a complex and surprising concept with the help of such a simple and minimalist design.
