We’ve shown you images of Google’s offices and headquarters and we’ve had the opportunity to closely analyze them along with everyone else but never before have we has the opportunity to see images of Goggle’s data centers. Usually, data centers are hidden far away for multiple reasons, including the more efficient use of energy. This makes them difficult to find and quite mysterious.

But now Google gives us an unprecedented opportunity to take a close look at 9 of its data centers. It’s an interesting decision to go transparent and, besides the images, Goggle also offers us information. According to Goggle, these centers must process 3 billion search queries a day as well as 71 hours of YouTube videos every minute so you can imagine the kind of technology and energy needed for that. But even so, these centers are among the most energy-efficient in the world and they only use half of the energy of a typical date center.

To achieve those numbers, Google’s data centers take advantage of innovative concepts in terms of design and use of energy. For example, the data center from Hamina, Finland features a cooling system that utilizes sea water from the Bay of Finland. The one from Douglas, Georgia shows us the pipes that are present in all the centers and that keep highly-pressurized water in case a fire occurs. In this particular area, the water is cleaned and filtered so that it doesn’t contaminate the facility. The bright and bold colors let everyone know which pipe is used for a particular area.
