Penthouse Refurbishment by Avignon et Clouet in Nantes, France

Even though most of us would agree that France is a beautiful place, with incredible views and a lot of places to see, this doesn’t mean you need to build a glass house in order to make that happen. Located in Nantes, France, this penthouse was designed by Avignon et Clouet.They seem to have had good intentions but they took them a little too far, to the extreme.

The idea was to create the impression of a bigger space and in the same time to adopt a modern idea together with nontraditional materials. Glass divisions were used instead of solid walls and this helped create a more open and vast space but, in the same time, it tends to look like an office or the interior of a hospital. The glass is great when used properly but it’s not a material that gives warmth and comfort. In other words, this doesn’t look like a cozy home at all.

An interesting detail is the indoor pool that is something unusual and quite surprising. The location of the pool is also great because it allows amazing views to be enjoyed by the users. The penthouse also features a retracting staircase that is very interesting but in the same time it’s not very safe. So, overall, the intention was good and the architects tried to create a modern and refreshing design, but the choice of the materials and the way they were combined was not as successful as planned.{pics by Stéphane Chalmeau}
