Not Your Grandma’s Floral Sofa

We’ve all been there, haven’t we? At our grandmother’s house, watching black-and-white movies on her floral couch? I have…except she called it a “davenport,” which I never knew what that word actually meant until I was in my 20s and decided to look it up, once and for all. For as much as I loved visiting my grandmother and her home, I never felt I was quite ready to make the leap into floral sofa-hood. Figured that was many decades off.

But it doesn’t have to be! Upon closer inspection of many floral sofa-touting spaces, I’ve come to realize that, in the right setting, flowers printed onto a sofa provide the perfect impact. Consider the following:

This extra-large floral print is airy, sophisticated, and serene. The muted colors add to and are in cohesion with the rest of the neutral space, with one pop of red. This is definitely a contemporary take on floral print; imagine the difference in the room’s “busy-ness” that a small, tight-knit floral print would make.

This space adheres strictly to its three-color palette (if ivory counts as a “color,” that is!). Thus, the two-tone floral gives a big bang for its decorative buck, breaking up the solids throughout the rest of this space. With chocolate-colored flowers on a cream background, this sofa is elegant and interesting in an otherwise very tight color scheme. Plus, how could you go wrong with those beautiful legs and casters?

In this charming, eclectic space, a floral-print couch is almost the last thing one would expect to see…which, in my opinion, is why it works so well here. The floral fabric involves similar tones that almost read as a neutral, despite the flowers being a medium size. The vaulted ceilings work especially well here, giving the florals (and everything else in this delightful space) some breathing room.

Rich, warm (dare I say heavy?) colors in solid blocks define this space, which is why the floral sofa is a genius choice in helping to break up the chunkiness of the room without detracting from color palette. The flowery print works well with the skirted ottoman to add femininity to the otherwise very masculine space.

In this simply decorated room, a minimalist floral print provides bursts of color that are accentuated by the fabric’s white background. Paired with a mid century modern coffee table and few other understated furnishings, this floral sofa is the obvious and intentional star of the space.

In classic red-and-white, an oversized floral print easily and with sophistication softens the sharp angles of the rest of the space. The graphical print includes plenty of white space – a modern touch that fits in perfectly with rest of contemporary space.
