Modern version of the traditional Vietnamese “tube house”

The owner of this house used to live in Toronto but decided to return to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam in order to help her mother. Being used with a spacious and airy home, she felt really uncomfortable when she realized that her childhood home was dark and crowded. She presented great interest in sustainable design so she decided to use that as inspiration for her new home.

As a result, Ms. Ha and Mr. Shen, her future husband, started planning their new home. They went to Vo Trong Nghia, a celebrated Vietnamese architect for help. He was a friend and he also presented the same interest in minimalist and sustainable design as Ms. Ha. Then, in 2010, the couple started designing their home, a four-level tube house of about 220 square meters/2,368 square feet. The house was built in eight months and cost $150,000.

The couple’s new house is situated between two empty buildings lots. It features white concrete slabs on the front and back facades meant to deflect the direct sunlight while also allowing for natural ventilation to occur. The ground level contains the main entry and a staircase, as well as a narrow bedroom with connection to a small courtyard. On the three upper floors are located the living area, the kitchen, the master bedroom, a second bedroom and a rooftop garden. Overall, the house features a modern design and the best part is the sustainability.
