How To Use Gray In A Kids Bedroom

Kids are as individual as adults, so designing a bedroom for one based around a neutral color, such as gray, should be treated in a unique way every time. The great thing about gray, in a child’s room, is that it will create a base color for other tones to stand out. If your kids’ room is too focused on one primary color then the overall look can be overwhelming. This is more typical in children’s bedrooms than guest rooms because, usually, the color theme is based around gender.

If you want to take the level of vibrancy down a tone, or two, mix and match pink or blue with gray. The real advantage of gray is that it works in a very natural way with a wide range of pinks and blues. From soft rose pink to hot fuchsia or powder blue to aquamarine, a mid toned gray will anchor the look in away that does not compromise or clash with your other color choices. And you can mix gray into any kid’s room in a wide variety of ways.

For a room that you want to be gender neutral – perhaps one where the space will be shared by boys and girls – paint your walls in a mid tone stone gray. High gloss white ceilings and woodwork, coupled with gray walls and flooring, will give you a base to work with.

Throw pinks, yellows and blues into the mix with your linen since this can be changed easily depending on who is coming to stay. For another shared room look, opt for stripy wallpaper in gray and white with coordinating duvet covers.

If your walls are already painted blue or pink, use gray stencils or stripes over the top to take the décor in a new direction. And for a more sophisticated look, suitable for a teenager, go for plain gray walls a tone, or two, darker.

Cabinets.

As children get a little older they need more storage space. A good way of updating a child’s room for a kid that is growing up is to install new storage cabinets. For the maturing child, gray ones will be a good choice which will last well into the teens. Gray fronted chests of drawers can be purchased with the right finish. Alternatively, simply hand paint one and finish it with some new fittings.

Dove Colored Flooring.

Teenagers will love a cool looking laminate floor in a bedroom and often prefer this to carpet. Gray flooring, like this, is just as easy to fit as a natural wood color, so why not install it instead? Alternatively, cover your dark wood flooring with a light gray rug which will coordinate with ashen colored linen. If you have a lot of pink in the room’s design, add a gray cushion and set the look off with a plain gray rug positioned at a jaunty angle from the bed.

Bedroom Linen.

Gray linen looks great, especially if it is used with a lighter pink shade in a girl’s room. However, it is also very suited to blue as well. Use gray duvets and pillow covers to bring the mixed look together. A good idea is to match your choice of gray linen to the same tone you have with the room’s drapes or blinds. And to complete the decoration, add a lamp with a stone colored shade.
