Futuristic library at the University of Chicago

For a lot of people, the library is synonym with a very boring place where usually geeks go, where you’re allowed to make noise and where fun is absolutely restricted. There are cases when this is true, but, as the new library from the University of Chicago shows us, it doesn’t have to be true.

This unusual glass dome that you’re seeing is actually the library. It’s not tall or boring, it’s fun and impressive. The reason why this building, if we can callIt like this, is not tall is because the designer Murphy Jahn have decided to put the books below grade. This way, their environment can be better controlled in order to achieve the desired temperature and humidity of 60 degrees, 30% RH at less cost. It’s actually a very smart idea. And since the books were placed below, there was no reason to design a tall building, so instead the architects opted for a more futuristic look.

Comfort, sustainability, light-control, structure, life-safety, operation and maintenance are the words that better describe this library.So, as you can see, libraries can be cool too. Even if there’s not much to relate to in that area, the library and its futuristic look are definitely a landmark. With a library like this, it’s almost a pleasure to study in there.{found on archdaily}
