Double Overhead Unusual Coffee Shop by SARUP

This unusual coffee shop that you see in the pictures was designed and built in 2010. It was a project developed by a design studio at the School of Architecture and Urban Planning (SARUP) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The studio is led by Professor Kyle Talbott and it’s a way of cultivating the student’s creativity and challenging them to explore the qualities of ordinary building materials at full scale.

The new creation is called Double Overhead and it’s a term commonly used in the surfer’s lexicon of maritime terminology. It’s used to describe a wave that is two times the size of the surfer’s body. This is just a metaphor for the challenging project and all the difficulties that the team encountered.

This intimate coffee shop is located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. Its interior design is a combination of eclectic 1950s modern features with home-brewed touches. The skeleton structure of the shop is made from salvaged tube steel. It supports a cladding made of reclaimed wood. This includes oak from a 150-year-old church and pine from a 100 year old barn. So it’s not just a challenge in terms of design, but also in terms of materials and new ways of protecting the environment.{found on archdaily}
