You’ll need to start this project by prepping your coasters. If you have pre-made round coasters, this is very easy. Simply wipe them down with a damp cloth to make sure they are clean. If you just have plain cork, you can use a large canister or similar object as a guide and cut your own coasters with an exacto knife.

Step 2: Apply tape.

Then you’ll need to apply some painter’s tape around the middle of each of your coasters. The section that is not covered will make up the painted section, so make sure that the proportions are what you are looking for. The coasters pictured leave about 1/3 of the surface unpainted. When your tape is in the correct spot, make sure that the entire length is secure so that no paint can seep through.

Step 3: Paint stripe color.

Once the tape is secure, it’s time to apply your paint. The first layer will be the thin stripe, so select the color or colors that you want to use as sort of secondary colors. Apply a coat or two until you reach your desired color and texture. A sponge brush actually works best for application on this surface.

Step 4: Repeat tape and paint.

Allow the paint to dry. Then you’ll need to remove the tape and apply another strip of tape lower on the coaster. The tape should cover some of the already painted section. The more of the painted section you cover, the bigger your stripe will be. Once the tape is in place, apply another coat of paint in a second color. You can even repeat this process again if you want to add more stripes and colors.

Step 5: Dry and remove tape.
