Once you’ve chosen the container you want to use, clean it inside and out. This way you start with a clean surface and you can better visualize the final result.

Step 2: A layer of rocks.

Choose the type of stones or pebbles you want to use for your terrarium. In this case, white rocks were used. They have a nice clean look and they contrast with the other layers but feel free to choose any type you want. Keep in mind that they need to be small. You can find pebbles near rivers or even in the garden. Wash them before you put them in. the rocks help with drainage.

Step 2: A layer of charcoal.

Next add a layer of charcoal. Of course, you don’t have to include this layer if it’s not necessary but charcoal helps filter the water so it’s especially useful in sealed terrariums.

Step 3: A layer of soil.

You also need to add soil to the terrarium. Add it on top of the charcoal and press it down with your hand so it’s firm and compressed. Add a little bit of water to let the soil drain down through the other layers.

Step 4: Add some green.

It’s now time to add some color to your terrarium. You can use moss or plants, depending on which you prefer. Take a walk outside and see what you can find. Moss is easy to fins so collect it and take it with you. You can also put in some tiny plants.

Step 5: Decorate the terrarium.

Once all the layers are in place and you’re happy with the way everything turned out, it’s time to add the finishing touches. There are numerous options here. You can either use a stone with an interesting shape, maybe some shells or whatever else you like. You can also add a figurine at the end. Maybe you can find some insect figurines. They would look lovely in there.
