Colour Psychology In The Home

Parents have all experienced a conversation similar to the following: “Mum, can I paint my room black?” “No way, that’s far too dark and depressing! Stick to the nice light blue.” Teenagers tend to hit a stage whereby they have a taste for the unconventional when it comes to bedroom decor. Yet a lot of suggestions seem to fall on deaf ears.

Black is rejected because it will make the room too gloomy. Red is another colour parents seem to go against; deeming it an angry and aggressive shade. This is a prime example of how colour psychology plays a key role in our home.

When you are picking a shade of paint or wallpaper for a particular room there is a lot more you should think about than merely your favourite colours. You need to delve a little bit deeper into the meanings behind the colours and the vibe they give off. By doing this you can determine which colours are suitable for certain rooms and which are not.

The bedroom is a place of rest. You need your bedroom to provoke feelings of relaxation and serenity. This is essential if you are to unwind and gently fall into a peaceful sleep every evening.

Blue and green shades are recommended.Go for natural colours. Think of shades that are reminiscent of the peaceful waves of the ocean or the delightful green grass that laces the hills in the spring months. Avoid anything bright and vivid. Colours such as red and orange are far too loud and they completely contrast with the feeling of relaxation.

There are no general rules when it comes to the living room. After all, some people like to relax in this area and therefore earthy and natural colours are recommended. Others see the room as the ideal place for socialising and therefore energising colours are advised. Moreover, consider the size of the room. If your living room is large then dark shades can make it more cosy, whilst a small living room can look bigger through the use of light colours.

The dining room.

The dining room is rarely an area whereby people experiment with bright and unusual colours. Most individuals tend to go neutral tones and then add personality to the room via the table decorations, napkins, placements, and alike, they choose.

Nevertheless, if you do want to think outside of the box, then red is an excellent choice. Why? It’s meant to make people feel more hungry. Just think of all the fast food places that incorporate red in their logos, such as; McDonald’s, Burger King, Nando’s, Pizza Hut. Don’t use blue in the dining room – this actually suppresses hunger.

The kitchen.

The kitchen is a place of creativity. You should use colours that will inspire you to cook up some scrumptious dishes. A zesty lemon or a luscious lime can work fantastically. These colours are energising and uplifting. They create the ideal cheerful ambiance  which will make you want to get out that recipe book!
