DIY Clay Pizza Slice Coasters

One of the easiest ways I have found to spice up my home decor is by getting new coasters! Coasters are a fun way to show off your unique personality while still protecting that beloved coffee table! There are many types of coasters that you can go out and buy at those big box stores. However, once you start thinking about the number of coasters that you need and the style that you want, the price can easily get expensive.

Supplies:

  • Pizza Slice Pattern
  • Air Dry Clay ( I used 1 LB Package of Natural ACTIV Clay – Air Dry Clay)
  • Rolling Pin
  • Brown Paint
  • Yellow Paint
  • Red Paint
  • Clear Acrylic Spray (not pictured)
  • Paint Brushes
  • Clay Cutting Tools

Before Getting Started:

Before starting this project, I created a ”pizza slice pattern”. This pizza slice pattern was a triangle that measured 4 inches long. Now, you can make your pizza slice pattern in any size that you choose. However, my suggestion is to first think about how you are going to be using your coasters. Personally, I was going to be using mine for soda glass bottles. So, the measurement of 4 inches was right for me.

This is just something to keep in mind before you begin working!

Step 1: Grab about one-third of you clay and roll it out until you have a nice ”slab” that is about 1/8 inches thick.

Step 2: Once your clay is rolled out, place your pizza slice pattern on top and trace around it using your clay tools. Then cut out your pizza slice using the same clay tools.

Keep repeating steps 1-2 until you have as many coasters has you desire. Then set your clay pizza slices to the side and let them air dry for 24 hours.

Step 3: Once your pizza slices have completely air dried, you’re ready to paint them! Now you can get as detailed and creative as you want during this step. Personally, I tried to make the painting simple by first painting my pizza crust (brown), then my cheese (yellow) and finally my pizza toppings (red and green for pepperonis/green peppers)!

When you’re happy with how your pizza slices look, set them aside to dry.

Step 4: When the paint on your pizza slices are dry, take them outside and spray a thin coat of clear acrylic spray onto them. This will help seal in all the paint and provide a protected coat to the top of your coasters.

Once your coasters are completely dry, you’re ready to set them out and begin using them!
