The Ashes to ashes chair is the graduation project of Johanna Mattsson, a recent graduate of the Danish Design School in Copenhagen. The name is very catchy and it also has an interesting signification. The chair is made from solid ash wood. This is a renewable material as at the end of its “life” it is meant to burn to ashes and thus creating nourishment for other plants and natural elements. So as the name says, it’s ashes to ashes.

The young designer has created this unusual chair in an effort to try to save an insignificant but important piece of our planet. Most furniture pieces are made of non-renewable resources. This chair is a very interesting piece of furniture as it introduces a lot of new and not that popular concepts. There are many details meant to make the owner really think about what this chair is trying to transmit.
First of wall, it’s the design that is very suggestive. And if this is not enough, then there’s also the fact that at the end of the cycle the chair will turn into ashes. This is a detail that enhances the responsibility the owner should take for this chair.
It’s a very interesting concept that really makes you think about the whole concept of lifecycle, It’s a common idea but unfortunately few people try to do something about it.
