Prototype Wood Mixtape Coffee Table

You probably remember those old-fashion cassette tapes that you used to put your music on a while ago. They are no longer used and they have become a part of history. However, for most of us, they are also a part of our history and a lot of memories are linked to this particular item. If you enjoyed making mixtapes for your friends, then you’ll probably find this table a real treasure.

This unique coffee table designed by Jeff Skierka is a replica of a cassette tape. It’s made of reclaimed maple, walnut and Lucite with a plexiglass top. It’s the first prototype for this design. The table is a 12:1 scaled replica of the tape we used to carry around in our pockets. It’s indeed a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture that would make a unique addition to any home. It’s also something worth to be displayed in public spaces as well.

A Special Hanger “Half=One” by Tess Hill

From ancient times man has always been an inventive human being. He managed to create his own tools, weapons, and means of transport or build various types of shelters where he could live and protect himself. In the museums of the world you can notice different proves of his progress and the way he managed to become the present human being with all kinds of gadgets, modern technology and other high-tech items due to its creativity and imagination. Perhaps the fight for surviving is the main factor that pushed the man forward or forced him to adapt the new levels of life and make him show his inventive power.

The Spanish artist and designer, Tess Hill is an inventive person and tried to show us how we can transform a vintage piece into a new thing with different functions. A proof of this thing is a special hanger” Half= One”. It refers to an old wooden chair that became a practical clothes hanger and shelf at the same time. The initial chair was cut into half, flipped and hanged on the wall so that you can put there your hat, scarf, cap or even some magazines or books. You may also think of using it in the bathroom where you can put your towel and your cosmetics.

Funny Swing Table

Most of the times kids never like the sound of “Kids, dinner is ready!”. All the time they play and have fun and such a moment may disturb their plans. There are even kids that do not like so much eating a real meal as they prefer something sweet or a snack instead. It is why parents must find all sorts of strategies to make them eat a healthy meal and come to eat happily. Usually parents think of the colors the kids see in their plates, the design of the food that must be attractive or see the meal as a kind of game.

Perhaps if they choose the appropriate furniture the results are even better. That is why, the funny Swing Table may represent an option for them. It is a four poster table that has a suspended central GEO lampshade and eight hanging chairs which sway in a nice way. Kids will definitely be enchanted to come to dinner whenever they are called and perhaps they will not be the only ones that will adore it.

Functional door drawers by Rota-Lab

When you already have your house filled with storage units and cabinets and there’s still not enough storage space and you still need more, then it’s time to turn to some more unconventional solutions. Rota-Lab is a Rome-based design studio and the one that came up with a very ingenious idea. The studio created a series of door drawers.

The idea is very clever and very ingenious. The door is an item that will always be part of the décor so instead of trying to come up with new ways of squeezing everything inside the cabinets you already have maybe it would be practical to use the door for that as well. These door drawers don’t actually provide a lot of storage space but they offer something in addition to everything else you can come up with. This idea is particularly useful in the case of small homes. When space becomes a challenge, these door drawers can be really helpful.

Capri Mirror frame with TV unveiled at Milan Design Week

We showed you a few days ago mirrors that took advantage of the latest technology and computer interface, to become intelligent surfaces that could display a wide range of interesting gadgets working almost like an iPad or a smart phone. Similar to those mirrors this piece draws its inspiration from the Snow White story, where the evil queen had a magic mirror which was feeding her information. With the technological progress those exact things found in stories written a few hundred years ago can be manufactured.

Jetclass designed the Capri frame with mirror TV. This piece was reviled in Milan at iSaloni and along the black or white finish that works as a mirror there is a flat-screen TV behind the glass. When the TV is off, that fine glass is a perfect clear mirror; when the TV is on, the powerful bright light passes through the glass and the picture is centered and crystal clear. Only a small portion around the TV works then as a mirror which is kind of wired at first sight.

The space-saving Ladder

You and I are aware of the fact that most of the people we know live in apartments in big crowded cities. For that category of inhabitants there are entire divisions that plan how to make things smaller, or as compact as possible but to still offer the same amount of functionality. Some have more than others, but after all we are all equal and we deserve the same chances. With this way of thinking the problems through, Company and Company designed a ladder that can be folded to occupy a very tiny space behind a door or a closet and still could offer the same amount of functionality as regular one.

As we can see in these pictures the ladder compacts into a smaller unit thanks to each rung that has special hinges that allow the outside portions to fold in towards each other. A brass joint passes through the center of each rung, reinforcing the place where the man could step. I like the design and I appreciate everything that helps people in a way or another but this ladder is not quite finished.

I don’t want to be mean, but from where I stand the ladder looks a little unsafe and I can’t imagine this supporting a full scale adult that actually does some work in a place very hard to reach. With a little more research and creativity this space-saving ladder could totally work in a tight apartment.

The Hed Lyte collection by Creative Session

If you love wildness in general and like the idea of having an animal trophy in your home but not the traditional type, Hed Lyte is a concept that will instantly catch your attention. This concept was the idea of Creative Session who then came up with a mini collection. It was an attempt to let you add a wild touch to your interior décor but still keeping in mind the functionality that is required.

Having decorations in the house can be a real treat but everything becomes even more interesting and practical when the decorations also have a functional side besides being purely for display. It’s what this collection tries to offer. The pieces from this collection are based on a popular and traditional idea but the designers managed to offers them a modern look and to reinvent the whole concept. It includes two pieces: a deer and an elephant. It’s actually only their heads.
