An authentic and yet innovative barber shop in the heart of Amsterdam

There aren’t many barber shops left in the world these days. However, those that still exist are that much more special and unique. But it’s not just the rarity that makes this one worthy of attention. This barber shops also has a very interesting interior design. The barber shop we’re talking about is located in the center of Amsterdam.

It’s a 19th century shop and it’s called Barber Amsterdam. It’s an iconic place and a landmark easy to detect. It’s very interesting how the shop has been visibly modernized and yet it still manages to look authentic and still has that atmosphere specific to the barber shops in the old days. Structurally, the interior is relatively simple. The style is industrial with modern influences and the color palette balances shades of white and brown.

One of the most interesting details about Barber Amsterdam is the network of copper tubes that branch across the walls and ceiling of the shop. These tubes carry water and electricity, depending where they lead to. Some tubes channel the water to the sinks while others bring electricity to the light bulbs. The materials used for the interior include plywood and concrete. The walls are mostly covered with white tiles. It’s an interesting design, the creation of Ard Hoksbergen, a graduate that was awarded the Dutch Archiprix and that will hopefully continue to impress us.
