Abandoned stable turned into family home by Ábaton Architects

This beautiful property is located in Guijo de Santa Bárbara, Cáceres 10459, Spain. It now seems like a very beautiful family home. It’s cozy and chic and it benefits from a wonderful location. However, you would be surprised to find out that it once used to be an ugly and abandoned stable. It was transformed into the lovely family home that you see now in 2010.

The transformation was something that Ábaton Architects were asked to take care of. The new residence covers a total area of 322 square meters and it’s surrounded by 5 ha of outdoor beauty. The main idea was to completely renovate the abandoned stable and to turn it into a family home. The project also had to be consistent and respectful to the environment. As you can imagine, it wasn’t an easy task. The whole building had to be restructured and remodeled.

There were also some problems related to the electricity and water supply but these were solved by sing sustainable systems that ÁBATON uses in all its projects. This includes a solar panel system with storage batteries that supplied energy during the summer and turbines that use the courses of two streams that run through the property and that are used to provide electricity during the winter.

The new residence was built using stone that was found on the property. The swimming pool is made from the same material. Several structural changes have also bee made. For example, the supporting walls from the interior have been replaced with light metal pillars. Internally, the whole structure was changed. The haylofts have been transformed into bedroom. It’s now a cozy and inviting family home and the fact that it used have a different history is almost unnoticeable. It was indeed a surprising transformation. Not the type of project that you see everyday.
