This is Domus Civita, a marvelous house located in Civita di Bagnoregio. Its main structure was once part of a larger building and that one was originally built in the 14th century. Then, in the 20th century, the structure was divided up. Now the house belongs to architect and Studio F owner Patrizio Fradiani who bought it in 2011.

The house impresses on many levels. The exterior, the landscape and the views are breathtaking. This detail alone would make it spectacular and yet there are many other amazing features to admire here. The house also has most of its original features. These include the original stone fireplace, the wooden beams and the terracotta floors which are all wonderful.

But, as beautiful as all these things may be, they’re not what makes this property so interesting. There is one secret feature that makes everything else seem like nothing compared to it. It’s the underground caverns that we’re talking about. There are carved into the soft volcanic stone and they form a series of tunnels and caves.

These structures date from the middle ages and Roman and Estrucan times. The caverns and tunnels can be accessed from the ground floor. They have been beautifully restored and they were transformed into a meditation room, an art gallery, a wine cellar and a pool area with a hot tub. When you add these amazing features to the list of beautiful elements that describe this property it’s impossible not to fall in love with it. It is, indeed, a small piece of paradise.
