Out-of-the-box Renovation For A 37sq-m Apartment In Madrid’s Historic Downtown

Usually, renovating or redecorating spaces with history significance and with a lot of history behind them is difficult. On one hand, you want to preserve as much of the original as possible but, on the other hand, you also want the new design to be fresh and unique. It’s this difficulty to create the perfect balance that makes things challenging.

For this apartment, things weren’t any different. This is an apartment located in Madrid’s historic downtown and it measures 37 square meters. It’s a small apartment so besides finding the right combination of old and new, the architects also had to make sure they allow the apartment to feel spacious and airy. The renovation was a project by Beriot, Bernardini Arquitectos and it was completed in 2010.

Several major changes have been made. Amongst them we can mention the fact that a mezzanine level was added to the apartment. This was possible thanks to the fact that the apartment is situated on the ground floor so the team was able to excavate 40 cm at the back and to make enough room for the mezzanine. In this space is the sleeping area and under it is the kitchen and the bathroom. As for the décor, the objective was to preserve the important details like the brick walls and to add a modern flair to the space.
